According to a new report conducted by 3GVision in June, global mobile quick response code usage has shot up significantly during the second quarter of 2011. The study bases its results on data collected by its i-nigma barcode reader. Barcode usage increased 88.5 percent during this time period, 3GVision found. In particular, the technology proved to be particularly popular in the United States, with American consumers scanning 39 percent more barcodes. This follows a tremendous 181 percent leap in the first quarter. Similar patterns were observed globally. "Monthly worldwide usage in May grew by 18.7 percent compared to April and by 88.5 percent over the past 3 months (compared to February)," notes the report. The growth of mobile barcode usage is important as the upcoming United States Postal Service summer sale approaches. The organization will discount postage rates for businesses that include QR codes on their materials, regardless of whether they are launching postcard or catalog printing initiatives.
