Girl Scout Promotes Water Pollution Awareness With Door Hangers

The Girl Scout campaign seeks to prevent waste dumping.

06/22/11

Stacey Gwin, a member of Girl Scout troop 80827, was recently recognized by her local community for a water pollution awareness project she launched in Portage, Michigan.

Gwin identified a number of clean water catch basins located around the town and labeled them to prevent residents from dumping waste down these drains. She also met with community members to discuss the effects waste can have on the town's fresh water supply.

To reach a broader audience, Gwin also launched a door hanger printing campaign. The print materials explain the purpose of her project and recommend strategies residents can take to decrease pollution.

Several other Girl Scouts in the area launched their own community-focused projects. One scout started a fitness program for children between the ages of 3 and 11, while another created a historic display highlighting the Girl Scout program.

Students in Hanover, Canada launched a similar door hanger program to stop waste dumping. In addition to the door hangers, the students also marked which basins led to fresh water sources with paintings of golden fish.
