The police are trying to curb theft.

The Stillwater Police Department is using print materials to raise awareness in lax security measures taken by local residents, the Stillwater Gazette reports. Lately, residents of the town have reported an increased number of stolen property and car break-ins. To point out bad habits, the Stillwater Police are taking to the streets to find potential criminal opportunities, such as garage doors left open, cars left unlocked or open windows. When they observe such instances, they leave a yellow door hanger explaining the importance of securing personal property. "We are trying to help residents become more aware of their surroundings," Police Chief John Gannaway told the source. "This is a courtesy reminder to lock their things up." Numerous notices have already been distributed around the town, and residents have been doing a better job of keeping their personal property secure. According to Gannaway, the best way to prevent crime is to not give criminals an opportunity in the first place. Door hangers are frequently used by organizations to generate awareness. For example, the city of Lake Elsinore in California recently began distributing door hangers to encourage residents to register their pets.
