The drains lead to fresh water sources..
06/14/11
In Hanover, Canada, waste dumping is a problem - many residents get rid of hazardous liquids by pouring it down sewer drains. However, what most community members don't know is that some of these sewage drains run to local rivers, contaminating the town's water supply. A group of students from John Diefenbaker Secondary School are hoping to raise awareness of the issue by painting yellow fishes by drainage pipes that lead to fresh water sources. The students are also running an informational door hanger printing campaign and delivering them to the homes of local residents near the drains. Students Katrina Granger and Amanda Gaasenbeek told the Bayshore Broadasting News Center they don't believe most people think of where contaminants end up when they dump them. "They hope the painted yellow fish will serve as a powerful reminder," the source notes. Door hanger printing as recently used in a similar awareness campaign in the United States. The City of Lake Elsinore in California leveraged door hangers to encourage residents to register their pets.
