The new science lab would improve the local economy..
06/16/11 The city of Alameda, California, is launching a postcard printing campaign to generate popular support for the construction of a second Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory campus, the Alameda Patch reports. LBNL is looking to build a secondary location that will consolidate smaller satellite programs in nearby Walnut Creek, West Berkeley and Emeryville. Alameda is currently one of the six regions being considered for the project. City officials hope that by gaining community support, they can make the choice even easier. "This opportunity is truly a game changer in terms of economic development for the city," Deputy City Manager Jennifer Ott, who heads the team that crafted the city’s proposal, told the source. Alameda officials are encouraging residents to participate in the postcard printing initiative, display signs on their lawns or attend public meetings to show their support. There are few materials as cost-efficient as postcards - thousands can be printed for the price of a radio or television advertisement - which makes them ideal for broad-reaching campaigns, such as the one initiated by Alameda.
