California Community Decries Rising Sanitary Waste Costs

The Ross Valley Sanitary District recently proposed rate increases for its services, but residents of the Larkspur, California, community aren't too happy with the changes. In response, they have launched a postcard printing campaign rallying against the proposed rate hikes.
Earlier this year, proposals suggested raising rates by approximately $500 for waste removal. After a public backlash, the city council suggested a more moderate $300 increase. Residents still weren't happy, however. Now, public opposition continues to mount after postcards were sent to all 18,000 ratepayers.
"Your voice matters," the Larkspur-Corte Madera Patch quotes the postcard as saying. "Sign and send the enclosed postcard immediately and it will be delivered to the Ross Valley Sanitary District on your behalf."
The postcard was designed and funded by local businessman Dennis Gilardi, with the goal of getting the majority of ratepayers to submit formal requests by June 28.
Because postcards are inexpensive to print, they are frequently used in protest movements. For example, earlier this year, a PTA in California decried school budget cuts through postcard printing.
