We love your books\u2014they\u2019re absolutely gorgeous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sylvia Medina:<\/strong> Thank you! We work really hard at that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Zoe Fisher:<\/strong> Who does Green Kids Club primarily serve?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sylvia Medina:<\/strong> We serve <strong>kids, parents, and educators<\/strong>, teaching them about <strong>environmental protection and endangered animals<\/strong>. Our books highlight species that are at risk or need conservation efforts. How do your books and programs encourage kids and families to be more active in environmental conservation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sylvia Medina:<\/strong> We started with stories about African wildlife, but we\u2019ve shifted our focus to animals in the U.S. People are more engaged when they learn about species in their own backyard. Books like <em>Grizzly 399<\/em> gained a lot of traction because people are deeply connected to wildlife they recognize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve also worked with <strong>schools and grants<\/strong> to distribute books for free. For example, we\u2019ve partnered with <strong>Jackson-based organizations<\/strong> to bring environmental education into classrooms. Recently, we donated books to schools in <strong>Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho<\/strong>\u2014places where grizzly bears are part of daily life. Our goal is to provide kids with <strong>real-world knowledge<\/strong> about these animals so they become future environmental stewards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Zoe Fisher:<\/strong> That\u2019s such a great initiative! How did Green Kids Club first start?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sylvia Medina:<\/strong> I\u2019m an <strong>environmental engineer<\/strong>, and I moved to <strong>Idaho Falls<\/strong> for work. At first, I didn\u2019t want to be here. I was from the Southwest and thought I\u2019d freeze! But then I <strong>fell in love with the landscape<\/strong>. I could drive an hour and see <strong>moose, bears, and owls<\/strong>. That completely changed me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I later founded an <strong>environmental engineering company<\/strong> called <strong>Northwind<\/strong>, which I ran for 15 years before selling it. After having kids, I wanted them to understand <strong>environmental stewardship<\/strong>, so I started <strong>writing stories<\/strong>. I had <strong>no background in publishing<\/strong>, but I figured I\u2019d learn as I went. My books originally followed my own children, <strong>Maya, Victor, and Tiago<\/strong>, as the \u201cGreen Kids.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, I connected with <strong>Elephants Without Borders<\/strong> and co-wrote a book with them about a <strong>rescued baby elephant<\/strong>. That was the start of our <strong>Environmental Hero Series<\/strong>\u2014real-life stories of wildlife conservation. What sets Green Kids Club apart from other environmental education programs?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sylvia Medina:<\/strong> Unlike other authors who might publish <strong>one or two books<\/strong> about conservation, our entire mission is built around <strong>environmental storytelling<\/strong>. We also <strong>partner with conservation groups<\/strong>\u2014for example, <em>Project Chimps<\/em> helps with chimpanzee rescue, and <strong>part of our book profits go to them<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also <strong>highlight real animals<\/strong>\u2014our books tell <strong>true stories<\/strong>, not just fictionalized tales. That connection makes a difference when teaching kids about conservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Zoe Fisher:<\/strong> That\u2019s powerful! You mentioned working on 3D animation\u2014can you tell me more?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sylvia Medina:<\/strong> We\u2019re currently collaborating with a <strong>Hollywood-based team<\/strong> to bring <strong>Yellowstone wildlife to life through animation<\/strong>. Kids from other countries hear about <strong>Yellowstone<\/strong>, but they\u2019ve never seen it. Imagine them experiencing <strong>wolves, grizzlies, and geysers<\/strong> through a <strong>3D experience<\/strong>\u2014that\u2019s what we want to create.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Zoe Fisher:<\/strong> That\u2019s so exciting! You mentioned branding challenges\u2014what strategies have helped grow awareness for Green Kids Club?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sylvia Medina:<\/strong> Because we\u2019re based in <strong>Idaho<\/strong>, we don\u2019t have the same publishing access as someone in <strong>New York or LA<\/strong>. So we\u2019ve taken a different approach:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Licensing deals<\/strong> \u2013 We recently partnered with <strong>YaYa International<\/strong> to bring Green Kids Club to <strong>Southeast Asia<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trade shows<\/strong> \u2013 Attending the <strong>Licensing Show in Las Vegas<\/strong> helped us secure five new licenses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Park partnerships<\/strong> \u2013 We\u2019re hoping to have our <strong>Yellowstone wolf book approved for national park stores<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s been a slow process, but we\u2019re steadily expanding our reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-pale-ocean-gradient-background has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-57203fe59048afed19797e1e9e00d3cf\" style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong><em>\u201cSurround yourself with really excellent people who know more than you do, who can help you be successful, and always make sure you have good cash flow.\u201d<\/em> <strong>Sylvia Medina, Environmental Engineer<\/strong>\u200b<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.printingcenterusa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Mockup-5-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14032\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.printingcenterusa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Mockup-5-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.printingcenterusa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Mockup-5-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.printingcenterusa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Mockup-5-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.printingcenterusa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Mockup-5-2-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.printingcenterusa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Mockup-5-2-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.printingcenterusa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Mockup-5-2-1170x780.jpg 1170w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Zoe Fisher:<\/strong> That\u2019s great progress! How do you manage wearing so many hats as a small business owner?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sylvia Medina:<\/strong> It\u2019s definitely tough. We have a <strong>small but committed team<\/strong>\u2014two artists, a book layout designer, and a marketing coordinator. We\u2019re constantly juggling projects, but we believe in our mission. I also still have <strong>kids in school<\/strong>, so balancing everything is a challenge!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-pale-ocean-gradient-background has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-9224099f1f9982a5f76e7199b4fb0243\" style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong><em>\u201cWe\u2019ve sold thousands of the Grizzly 399 books. She was an iconic grizzly bear, almost 30 years old, who had 23 cubs.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> <strong>Sylvia Medina, Environmental Engineer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Zoe Fisher:<\/strong> What advice would you give other small business owners just starting out?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sylvia Medina:<\/strong> Surround yourself with <strong>great people<\/strong> and <strong>manage your cash flow carefully<\/strong>. When I ran my engineering company, I made sure we had <strong>steady income and financial stability<\/strong>. With Green Kids Club, I fund a lot of it myself, but my biggest piece of advice is: <strong>don\u2019t take on debt unless absolutely necessary<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, <strong>never stop asking<\/strong>. When I wanted to co-write a book with <strong>wildlife photographer Tom Mangelsen<\/strong>, he said <strong>no three times<\/strong>. But I kept asking, and eventually, he agreed. I\u2019d love to see our books become <strong>standard educational tools<\/strong> in classrooms. We&#8217;re really excited to be participating in this interview with you. Zoe Fisher: Of course! We love your books\u2014they\u2019re absolutely gorgeous. Sylvia Medina: Thank you! We work really hard at that. Zoe Fisher: Who does Green Kids Club primarily serve? Sylvia Medina: We serve kids, parents, and educators, teaching them about environmental protection and endangered animals. Our books highlight species that are at risk or need conservation efforts. We aim to reach families, schools, and classrooms to inspire young readers between the ages of six to ten\u2014though, to be honest, even adults read our books! Zoe Fisher: That\u2019s amazing! How do your books and programs encourage kids and families to be more active in environmental conservation? Sylvia Medina: We started with stories about African wildlife, but we\u2019ve shifted our focus to animals in the U.S. People are more engaged when they learn about species in their own backyard. Books like Grizzly 399 gained a lot of traction because people are deeply connected to wildlife they recognize. We\u2019ve also worked with schools and grants to distribute books for free. For example, we\u2019ve partnered with Jackson-based organizations to bring environmental education into classrooms. Recently, we donated books to schools in Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho\u2014places where grizzly bears are part of daily life. Our goal is to provide kids with real-world knowledge about these animals so they become future environmental stewards. Zoe Fisher: That\u2019s such a great initiative! How did Green Kids Club first start? Sylvia Medina: I\u2019m an environmental engineer, and I moved to Idaho Falls for work. At first, I didn\u2019t want to be here. I was from the Southwest and thought I\u2019d freeze! But then I fell in love with the landscape. I could drive an hour and see moose, bears, and owls. That completely changed me. I later founded an environmental engineering company called Northwind, which I ran for 15 years before selling it. After having kids, I wanted them to understand environmental stewardship, so I started writing stories. I had no background in publishing, but I figured I\u2019d learn as I went. My books originally followed my own children, Maya, Victor, and Tiago, as the \u201cGreen Kids.\u201d Then, I connected with Elephants Without Borders and co-wrote a book with them about a rescued baby elephant. That was the start of our Environmental Hero Series\u2014real-life stories of wildlife conservation. From there, we partnered with former Disney artists and wildlife conservation groups to bring more books to life. Zoe Fisher: That\u2019s such an incredible journey! What sets Green Kids Club apart from other environmental education programs? Sylvia Medina: Unlike other authors who might publish one or two books about conservation, our entire mission is built around environmental storytelling. We also partner with conservation groups\u2014for example, Project Chimps helps with chimpanzee rescue, and part of our book profits go to them. We also highlight real animals\u2014our books tell true stories, not just fictionalized tales. That connection makes a difference when teaching kids about conservation. Zoe Fisher: That\u2019s powerful! You mentioned working on 3D animation\u2014can you tell me more? Sylvia Medina: We\u2019re currently collaborating with a Hollywood-based team to bring Yellowstone wildlife to life through animation. Kids from other countries hear about Yellowstone, but they\u2019ve never seen it. Imagine them experiencing wolves, grizzlies, and geysers through a 3D experience\u2014that\u2019s what we want to create. Zoe Fisher: That\u2019s so exciting! You mentioned branding challenges\u2014what strategies have helped grow awareness for Green Kids Club? Sylvia Medina: Because we\u2019re based in Idaho, we don\u2019t have the same publishing access as someone in New York or LA. So we\u2019ve taken a different approach: It\u2019s been a slow process, but we\u2019re steadily expanding our reach. \u201cSurround yourself with really excellent people who know more than you do, who can help you be successful, and always make sure you have good cash flow.\u201d Sylvia Medina, Environmental Engineer\u200b Zoe Fisher: That\u2019s great progress! How do you manage wearing so many hats as a small business owner? Sylvia Medina: It\u2019s definitely tough.
