It\u2019s waterproof and fire-resistant, and it self-attaches to a portable generator to protect it from rain, snow, wind, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We serve anyone with a <strong>portable generator<\/strong>, from homeowners to businesses, and we also work directly with <strong>generator manufacturers<\/strong> to create custom white-label products for their catalogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Zoe Fisher:<\/strong> That\u2019s huge. That\u2019s awesome. So what led to the creation of GenTent? Why did you guys need to create this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tim Malette:<\/strong> Well, that brings us back to <strong>day one<\/strong>. Our CEO and inventor, Mark, came up with the idea during a <strong>bad ice storm in 2008<\/strong> here in New Hampshire. Power was out for weeks\u2014some people were without power for <strong>over 16 days<\/strong>. Mark realized there wasn\u2019t a safe way to use a generator in wet conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He saw the warnings: <strong>\u201cDo not use in wet weather\u201d<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cDo not run near the home because of carbon monoxide\u201d<\/strong>\u2014which meant there was no good solution. He searched everywhere for a product that allowed for <strong>safe generator use<\/strong> in extreme weather, and when he found nothing, he decided to create one. And that\u2019s how GenTent was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-to-cyan-bluish-gray-gradient-background has-background\" style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong><em>\u201cWhen you\u2019re designing for customers, you need to think about their experience. Our manuals and safety guides are printed in a way that\u2019s easy to read, clear, and actionable because when the power is out, customers need information fast.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> <strong>Saloni Mahapatra, Brand Strategist<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Zoe Fisher:<\/strong> That\u2019s such an exciting and inspirational story. You really needed it, made the product, and now you\u2019re helping tons of people. Tim, as a <strong>supply chain manager<\/strong>, what are some of the biggest challenges you face in sourcing materials and ensuring smooth production?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tim Malette:<\/strong> Supply chain challenges are something every business deals with, but for us, <strong>material sourcing<\/strong> is a unique hurdle. Our canopy is <strong>NFPA 701 fire-rated<\/strong>, and finding <strong>fabric suppliers<\/strong> that can meet that standard is <strong>incredibly difficult<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even when we find suppliers that claim they can meet our requirements, we have to <strong>independently verify<\/strong> their claims through <strong>rigorous in-house testing<\/strong> and <strong>certified third-party testing<\/strong> in New York. And honestly, thank you for hosting this podcast because I feel like I just learned <strong>more about Tim\u2019s process than I ever knew<\/strong>\u2014and that makes my job as a <strong>brand strategist<\/strong> so much easier. Having a <strong>well-tested, reliable product<\/strong> makes marketing it much simpler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Zoe Fisher:<\/strong> I love that! So, Saloni, how do you approach marketing GenTent to both new and existing customers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Saloni Mahapatra:<\/strong> Great question! For <strong>existing customers<\/strong>, we focus on <strong>accessories and add-ons<\/strong>, but what we really pride ourselves on is that <strong>GenTent is a long-lasting, one-time purchase<\/strong>. Many of our customers have used their GenTent for <strong>over a decade<\/strong>\u2014sometimes their <strong>GenTent outlasts their generator!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <strong>new customers<\/strong>, we rely on <strong>interest-based marketing<\/strong>. Many people don\u2019t even know <strong>generator tents exist<\/strong>, so we have to <strong>introduce<\/strong> the product category before we can sell it. We target <strong>homeowners, first-time buyers, and people in storm-prone areas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amazon is one of our <strong>top sales channels<\/strong>, and there, we focus on <strong>competitor advertising, sponsored product listings, and strategic targeting<\/strong>. We also leverage <strong>print marketing<\/strong>, especially at <strong>trade shows<\/strong> and <strong>OEM partnerships<\/strong>. For example, last year at the <strong>National Hardware Show<\/strong>, we gave out <strong>customized palm cards<\/strong> showing each generator manufacturer what <strong>their custom GenTent<\/strong> would look like. That\u2019s <strong>so powerful<\/strong> because it gives them a clear vision without requiring a prototype.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-to-cyan-bluish-gray-gradient-background has-background\" style=\"font-size:18px\"><em><strong>\u201cWe believe in what we\u2019re doing, and that makes a huge difference. We\u2019re a small company, so all of us wear multiple hats, but we push through because we know we\u2019re making a product that keeps people safe.\u201d<\/strong><\/em> <strong>Tim Malette, Supply Chain Manager<\/strong>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Zoe Fisher:<\/strong> That\u2019s such a smart strategy. What advice would you give to business owners trying to <strong>differentiate<\/strong> their product in a competitive space?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Saloni Mahapatra:<\/strong> Own your <strong>unique selling points<\/strong>. For example, <strong>we have over 30 competitors on Amazon<\/strong>, but we set ourselves apart with: <br>\u2705 <strong>Stronger materials<\/strong><br>\u2705 <strong>Better customer service<\/strong><br>\u2705 <strong>Higher-rated safety standards<\/strong><br>\u2705 <strong>Positioning ourselves as a safety company, not just a product seller<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also collaborate with <strong>industry organizations<\/strong> to promote <strong>generator safety education<\/strong>, which helps people understand the risks and see GenTent as the best solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Zoe Fisher:<\/strong> That\u2019s amazing. He searched everywhere for a product that allowed for safe generator use in extreme weather, and when he found nothing, he decided to create one. And that\u2019s how GenTent was born. \u201cWhen you\u2019re designing for customers, you need to think about their experience. Our manuals and safety guides are printed in a way that\u2019s easy to read, clear, and actionable because when the power is out, customers need information fast.\u201d Saloni Mahapatra, Brand Strategist Zoe Fisher: That\u2019s such an exciting and inspirational story. You really needed it, made the product, and now you\u2019re helping tons of people. Tim, as a supply chain manager, what are some of the biggest challenges you face in sourcing materials and ensuring smooth production? Tim Malette: Supply chain challenges are something every business deals with, but for us, material sourcing is a unique hurdle. Our canopy is NFPA 701 fire-rated, and finding fabric suppliers that can meet that standard is incredibly difficult. Even when we find suppliers that claim they can meet our requirements, we have to independently verify their claims through rigorous in-house testing and certified third-party testing in New York. That process adds time but ensures that we deliver a safe, reliable product to our customers. Zoe Fisher: That extra step is so important. You\u2019re ensuring that your customers are getting something they can trust. Saloni Mahapatra: Exactly! And honestly, thank you for hosting this podcast because I feel like I just learned more about Tim\u2019s process than I ever knew\u2014and that makes my job as a brand strategist so much easier. Having a well-tested, reliable product makes marketing it much simpler. Zoe Fisher: I love that! So, Saloni, how do you approach marketing GenTent to both new and existing customers? Saloni Mahapatra: Great question! For existing customers, we focus on accessories and add-ons, but what we really pride ourselves on is that GenTent is a long-lasting, one-time purchase. Many of our customers have used their GenTent for over a decade\u2014sometimes their GenTent outlasts their generator! For new customers, we rely on interest-based marketing. Many people don\u2019t even know generator tents exist, so we have to introduce the product category before we can sell it. We target homeowners, first-time buyers, and people in storm-prone areas. Amazon is one of our top sales channels, and there, we focus on competitor advertising, sponsored product listings, and strategic targeting. We also leverage print marketing, especially at trade shows and OEM partnerships. For example, last year at the National Hardware Show, we gave out customized palm cards showing each generator manufacturer what their custom GenTent would look like. That\u2019s so powerful because it gives them a clear vision without requiring a prototype. \u201cWe believe in what we\u2019re doing, and that makes a huge difference.
