Meet Adam Umbach
American, b. 1986
Adam Umbach, born in Chicago and now living in Brooklyn, New York, has always been passionate about art. Inspired by the modern masters collection at the Art Institute of Chicago from an early age, he went on to earn a BFA in painting from the University of Wisconsin. Adam’s journey started with minimalist canvases inspired by the names of color swatches. Over time, his style evolved into abstract, geometric, and expressionist paintings.

His experiences in different places have shaped his art, from the seaside colors of East Hampton and Islesboro to the bold graphics of New York City’s architecture and graffiti. Adam’s work combines formalist explorations with photorealistic depictions of familiar objects like boats, rubber ducks, teddy bears, and pink flamingos. These subjects often appear across different works, inviting viewers to connect with their own memories and experiences.
Adam’s Art in His Own Words
“My paintings explore a collective nostalgia for childhood memories by juxtaposing detailed photorealistic representations of everyday objects that represent deep personal ties to memory with expressionistic mark making. Using my non-dominant hand to create the thickly rendered lines and forms, I build on the sense of play by drawing with the uncertainty and freedom of a child. This formal tension mirrors the balance between my playful, often humorous choice of subjects with the weight of the memories they symbolize—a sense of loneliness pervading a single teddy bear, toy, or boat combined with the comfort and hope that it brings.”
The Art Book
Adam Umbach’s art book is a delightful 6×6 saddle stitch booklet with 24 pages, showcasing his colorful and detailed artwork. We printed it on 100# gloss text for the inside pages and a 14pt gloss cover, ensuring a top-notch finish that highlights the vibrancy of his pieces. With 150 copies made, this book is a true treasure!
The glossy finish brings out the vivid colors and intricate details, making every page a feast for the eyes. Adam’s art, with its blend of photorealism and playful abstraction, looks absolutely stunning in this format.
