Bringing Living Stories to Life in Print: Modern Natives by Andrea Grant

At PrintingCenterUSA, we’re inspired by creators who use print not just as a final product, but as a powerful storytelling medium. For artist, writer, and filmmaker Andrea Grant, print became the foundation for a much larger creative universe.

Her project, Modern Natives, is a beautifully illustrated book that reimagines Coast Salish stories within a contemporary world blending poetry, visual art, and cinematic storytelling into a form readers can hold, revisit, and return to.

What began as a deeply personal exploration of identity and ancestry has grown into a living story world designed to move fluidly between page, screen, and voice.

About the Creator

Andrea Grant is the Founder and CEO of Copious, a creative agency and storytelling platform. As a multidisciplinary artist, Andrea’s work explores identity, cultural memory, and the evolution of oral tradition through modern mediums.

With Modern Natives, Andrea brings together ancestral narratives and contemporary life, creating stories that feel both rooted and immediate honoring cultural origins while inviting new audiences into the experience.

The Inspiration

Modern Natives grew out of Andrea’s deep curiosity about identity, ancestry, and the way stories travel across generations and landscapes. Inspired by Coast Salish oral traditions, the project reimagines ancestral themes within a modern, living world one where these stories naturally surface in everyday life.

By blending oral tradition with poetry, illustration, and cinematic storytelling, Andrea sought to create narratives that feel relevant and alive today, while remaining grounded in cultural origins. The goal was not to preserve stories as static artifacts, but to allow them to continue evolving just as oral traditions have always done.

The Challenge

Andrea envisioned Modern Natives as more than a book. She wanted to create a printed piece that felt intimate and tactile:

Specs:
Size 8.5 x 11 (8.5 x 11 Inch)
Binding Perfect Bind
Pages 134
Cover Paper 100# Cardstock Gloss (9 pt.)
Cover Ink (4/0) Full Color Front / Empty Back
Inside Ink (4/4) Full Color Both Sides
Inside Paper 80# Paper Matte (4 pt.)
Cover Finish Soft Touch Lamination

The challenge was producing a high-quality illustrated book that could stand on its own as a modern myth collection, while also serving as the first expression of a much larger creative vision.

The Printing Solution

To bring Modern Natives to life in print, Andrea partnered with PrintingCenterUSA to produce a beautifully crafted illustrated book that matched the depth and intention of the stories themselves.

The finished piece delivers rich color, clarity, and professional quality allowing the artwork and text to work together seamlessly. The result is a printed book that feels both timeless and contemporary, inviting readers into a world that bridges past and present.

Print became the natural starting point a physical anchor for stories meant to travel beyond the page.

The Impact

As a printed book, Modern Natives offers readers something deeply personal: a tactile experience that can be revisited like a modern collection of myths. The physical format invites reflection, connection, and a slower engagement with story something digital formats alone can’t replicate.

For Andrea, the book is just the beginning.

Looking ahead, Modern Natives is envisioned to expand into animated shorts, spoken-word mythology-based films, and longer-form animation, with the potential for television development. Print serves as the foundation grounding the project while allowing it to grow across mediums.
